The aim of this meeting is to review current perspectives for design, manipulation and efficient control of self-organizing complex chemical systems, ranging from biotechnology and reactive nanostructures to macroscopic pattern formation in chemical reactors. Both experimental studies of such phenomena and their mathematical modeling will be discussed. Possible technological applications of self-organization phenomena shall be considered.

Morphology and dynamics of microscopic bubbles in liquid crystals

Abstract:
Micrometer or nanometer scale bubbles suspended in liquid show interesting behaviors due to their large surface/volume ratio, variability of surface tension, high pressure and concomitant rapid absorption. Liquid crystal adds another dimension, on which the molecular orientational constraint at the surface plays a positive role, introducing a significant inter-bubble interactions. We prepared microscopic air bubbles suspended in liquid crystal by using a micro-capillary injection technique under a constant flow. By way of changing the hydrostatic pressure, the size of the bubble can be controlled. We observed a orientational configurational change upon changing the pressure, which results in a change of global change in many bubble configurations.
