The aim of this meeting is to review current perspectives for design, manipulation and efficient control of self-organizing complex chemical systems, ranging from biotechnology and reactive nanostructures to macroscopic pattern formation in chemical reactors. Both experimental studies of such phenomena and their mathematical modeling will be discussed. Possible technological applications of self-organization phenomena shall be considered.

Spontaneous motion of a droplet driven by chemical potential or photon flux
Abstract:
Spontaneous motion of a droplet driven by chemical energy gradient or by
electromagnetic energy gradient (photon flux) is realized using simple experimental systems.
Based on the observation of these systems together with recent experimental results reported for
the single molecular experiments on molecular machinery, we will propose a novel hypothesis on
the mechanism of chemo-mechanical energy transduction in living organisms. In our model
experimental systems, we adapted the energy source of chemical energy gradient or by photon
flux to drive the motion of a droplet.
We will report the generation of spontaneous motion on an oil/water system, where the
medium of Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction is used as an aqueous droplet. It is found that this
spontaneous motion is caused by the convection inside the droplet induced by Marangoni effect
[1]. As the next, we report the occurrence of spontaneous motion of an alcohol droplet on
aqueous phase driven by the solutal Marangoni effect. When alcohol with a relatively long
hydrocarbon chain, such as pentanol, is used, a droplet of alcohol is formed and moves
spontaneously on water for over the period of several hours [2]. Thirdly, vectorial controlled
motion of an oil droplet driven by laser irradiation is described. The direction of a droplet motion
is switched by changing the position where the laser beam is irradiated [3].
The above-mentioned dynamic phenomena on the spontaneous motions of droplets will
contribute not only to help the understanding of the fundamental mechanism on molecular
machinery in biological systems, but also to construct a novel field on nonlinear nonequilibrium
physics.
